Reading Response 2
Educating Esme
Back (to personal page)

I found this reading to once again be very interesting to read. I like how in the beginning of this reading Esme talks about Halloween and how she dresses up for the students. I remember when my teachers in elementary school dressed up for Halloween. I loved when they did this because I felt like it helps students connect more with the teacher and see that they could be fun just like kids. It portrays the message that your never too old to dress up for Halloween! I also like how Esme teaches science (Bernoulli’s Principle); she actually does experiments. It is easier for students to understand science when it is demonstrated to them. When Esme says to Mr. Turner “ I don’t work for you, I work for the children” I also found this very interesting because it shows how Esme sets aside work for her coworkers from work with her students. She has made it clear that she works for the students and they are who she is there for. I believe that as a future teacher, although I do believe that having a good relationships with co-workers is very important, my students will be just as important, if not more. They are the reason I will go to school everyday. Another part I found to be so good in the text was when Esme had the author of one of the stories she read with her students, one of the boys won the doll that was given by the author. I could not believe the way Mr. Turner reacted when a boy’s name was called to win the doll. I liked how Esme spoke up for the young male student, honoring him and explaining how he deserved to win this doll. Esme really helped to make the boy feel good about himself and in turn made him really happy to receive the doll. I really start to notice in this section how well Esme controls her classroom. All she has to do is hold up her thumb to get her student’s attention. This is important as teacher to show the students who is in control. Esme’s students could definitely determine that Esme is in charge. Esme also demonstrates this when she has the students use objects that they own as collateral for books they take out for free reading. This helps to teach students about responsibility. I also couldn’t believe when Esme’s Happy Box was stolen out of the room while the students were at an assembly. The students were very considerate during this time writing letters to Esme saying how they felt bad, one girl even making Esme another box out of her pencil box! Esme has instilled such great values to her students and they are appreciating her for everything she has taught them. I can go on and on about the actions that took place in this section of the novel but I would be here forever. Esme is a teacher that I aspire to be. The control and education power she has over her classroom is so unbelievably astonishing. I read it all in awe wanted to take the methods she does in her classroom into the future of my classroom. I can only hope to be able to inspire my students as much as Esme does in her classroom.
